'Was That An Earthquake?' North Jersey Asks
"What was that?" was the question that rumbled through a large swath of North Jersey and into New York State early Wednesday afternoon. Mine blasting? A sonic boom? Seneca guns? Unconfirmed reports of an earthquake or "seismic-like event" stretched from Newton and Sparta in Sussex County to as far east as the Palisades in Alpine beginning at 12:52 p.m. Jan. 11. Holiday Season House Fire Doused In Cresskill
Firefighters quickly doused a house blaze in Cresskill. No injuries were reported in the mid-evening fire Friday, Dec. 16, in the 2½-story home on Magnolia Avenue off the corner of 4th Street near the ballfields. Mutual aid, either at the scene or in coverage, was provided by firefighters from Bergenfield, Demarest, Dumont, Haworth and Tenafly. Borough fire officials were investigating the cause.

Four Suffer Smoke Inhalation In Overnight Old Tappan House Fire
Four people were hospitalized for smoke inhalation from an overnight house fire in Old Tappan, responders said. The blaze in the $1 million home at the end of a cul-de-sac on Parker Place broke out in the kitchen around 2:45 a.m. It immediately went to a second alarm on arrival, with a third alarm called roughly 20 minutes later. Responder In Route 9W Crash That Critically Injured Bergen Teens Brought To NJ To Face Charges
UPDATE: A volunteer firefighter accused in a horrific road-rage crash that nearly killed a fellow group of fellow Bergen County teens last week was brought back to New Jersey to face charges. Luke G. Stein, 18, of Cresskill was booked into the Bergen County Jail on Monday, Oct. 17, after being brought from the Boulder County Jail in Colorado. Firefighters Douse Overnight Closter Blaze
Closter firefighters doused an overnight house blaze. They were met by heavy fire coming from the attack of the 2½ -story wood-frame home on Jason Woods Road, just off Homans Avenue, shortly before 2 a.m. Monday. Mutual aid responders included firefighters from Demarest. All fire companies were released shortly after 4 a.m. No injuries were reported. Fire officials were trying to determine the cause. Deer Rescued From Demarest Storm Drain
It was a team effort as responders rescued a deer from a storm drain in Demarest. Police who responded to several calls summoned borough DPW workers and both Demarest and Haworth firefighters to County Road and Eastview Terrace shortly before 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4. The deer was safely removed and then examined by an animal control officer before being released.

Overnight Fire Severely Damages Norwood Home
Flames blew through the roof of a Norwood home near the Rockland County border. Firefighters battled extreme cold and slippery conditions to douse the upper-floor bedroom blaze, which broke out on Broadway just off Piermont Road around 2 a.m. Sunday. No serious injuries were immediately reported. Mutual aid responders either at the scene or in coverage included firefighters from Harrington Park, Closter, Demarest, Northvale and Old Tappan. Smoky Roof Fire Doused At Bergen County Nursing Home
Firefighters doused a smoky blaze at a Bergen County nursing home Friday afternoon. The building was evacuated and there didn't initially appear to be any serious injuries after the fire broke out between the roof and second floor at the Russ Berrie Home for Jewish Living around 1:30 p.m., responders said. Workers have been replacing sections of the roof for the past week and a half, they said.
